BEYOND THE FACE
Exploring the development of the Head and Face from Embryo to Six Years of Age
TARGET AUDIENCE
The course addresses osteopaths, physicians, physiotherapists, chiropractors, already trained or in training, and all professionals interested in studying human anatomy and physiology.
LANGUAGE
The course is in English with consecutive translation into Italian.
COURSE PROGRAMME
The basicranium and the developmental origin of the human head
– The role of the notochord in organizing the head
– The three composite bones – sphenoid, occipital and temporal bones – in forming the basicranium
– Formation of the primitive meninix and its role in forming the dural membranes surrounding the basicranium and the neural tube
– The role of the dural membranes in craniosynostosis and deformational plagiocephaly
Early development of the neural tube
– Three vesicle stage
– The five vesicle stage
The origin of the face in humans
– Pharyngeal mesenchyme and the six pharyngeal arches
– The special cranial nerves (CN V, VII, IX, X and XI) and the pharyngeal arches
– Pouches and clefts
– Formation of endocrine and immune structures from the pouches
Development of the first arch and pouch
– The maxilla and the mandible
– Development of the oral cavity and palate
– Cleft palate
– Development of the Eustachian tube and the auditory system
Development of the second, third, fourth and sixth arches
– The hyoid, thyroid cartilage and cricoid cartilage
– Larynx and upper esophagus
Maturation of the Face
– Expansion of the maxilla and angulation of the mandible
– Maturation of the oral cavity and teeth
– Shape changers in the oropharyngeal region
