COURSE PRESENTATION

The osteopathic treatment in the visceral area is embedded in different approaches. To appreciate the importance of osteopathic treatment in the visceral area, it becomes critical to analyse both the historical and clinical rationale behind it.
This review will focus on the main aspects that link organs’ function to the structure’s behaviour. Besides, we will review the technical features and the manual skills for each area.
In this context, the role of the autonomic nervous system is essential. Therefore we will analyse the viscerosomatic and somatovisceral relations to acknowledge the impact of visceral afferents’ activity on the structure and vice versa.
We will observe how the alteration of the visceral tissue quality, triggered by sympathetic hyperactivity, can produce substancial reductions in movement and generate a somatic dysfunction.
We will also notice how the activity and function of the visceral fascia are in functional continuity with the meningeal fascia dynamics.
At the end of the course, it will be much clearer how to integrate the approaches and how the visceral, myofascial, somatic, and craniosacral systems are thoroughly and continuously interconnected. It will also become easier to understand clinical reasoning based on integrating body systems and why osteopathy is defined as a salutogenic discipline.
